Health & Wellness

Our Nurse's Office, Student Support Services (including divisional counselors), and associated curricular programs work together to support and protect student health and wellness.

Nurse's Office

Two registered nurses are available on campus every school day to address any illnesses or injuries that occur during school hours.

Student Health Records

Student health records are kept confidential in the Nurse's Office and are reviewed by the nurse. However, certain information, such as severe allergies, is shared with faculty and staff on a “need to know” basis. Students must submit a physical examination report, including proof of vaccinations, when entering RAS, transitioning from Grade 5 to Grade 6, and transitioning from Grade 8 to Grade 9.

Health Screenings

At the start of each school year, all students undergo health screenings conducted by the nurse. These screenings include checks for vision, hearing, scoliosis, and dental caries. The goal is to identify potential health concerns and inform parents so they can arrange for any necessary follow-up care.

Health Conditions & Medications

Parents must notify the school if their child has a severe health condition such as asthma, severe allergies, diabetes, or seizures, and provide any necessary emergency information and medications. The nurse does not prescribe medication or administer injections but can give simple, non-prescription medications with parental permission, as indicated on the student medical form. Elementary students cannot carry or take medication on their own. If a secondary student takes medication on their own during school hours, the nurse's office must be notified. For the nurse to administer any medication (prescription or non-prescription), parents must provide it in its original container, along with a doctor's prescription for prescription medications, and a signed note with instructions for non-prescription medications.

Wellness

School counselors provide essential support to students by promoting their emotional, social, and academic well-being. They assist with personal development, help navigate challenges, and offer guidance on academic planning and career goals. Counselors are a valuable resource for students and families, offering a safe space for addressing concerns and connecting with additional support when needed.

Elementary counseling at RAS uses the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) system, which teaches and reinforces positive behaviors to reduce discipline issues and create a productive, safe learning environment. Our PBIS motto, RAS ROCKS, encourages students to be Responsible and Respectful, Open-minded, Courageous, Kind, and Safe. Students are guided to follow these values throughout the school.

Secondary Counseling at RAS is based on the American and International School Counseling Associations (ASCA & ISCA) for comprehensive programing. Using a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework the Counseling program is divided into four main components: school counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support.

  • The school counseling curriculum involves classroom guidance (SEL), parent/community workshops, and 1:1 check-in interventions.
  • Individual student planning involves working with students and their families to reduce barriers that may inhibit academic or social/emotional development. This includes: student observation and planning, team meetings, and data analysis.
  • Responsive services address student’s direct, immediate concerns & include counseling, consultation and referral. Students access counseling services via self referral, teacher/parent input, or as part of the CST or SST process.
  • System support component enables the school counseling program to be effective through a variety of support activities including professional development, consultation, collaboration, teaming, program audits/management.
Also part of the secondary school wellness program, RAS offers peer mediation, a process where students are trained to help their peers resolve conflicts and find win-win solutions. Mediation sessions are conducted in pairs, with trained mediators guiding their classmates through a structured 6-step process toward peaceful resolution. After completing an initial 2-day training, students receive certification as official mediators. Throughout the year, they continue to receive support from the Secondary School Counselor. Peer mediation helps foster a safe, supportive, and peaceful environment at RAS.

Child protection is a crucial element of student wellness, as it ensures that all students feel safe, supported, and able to focus on their personal and academic development. At RAS, child protection is seamlessly integrated into our wellness framework because it directly affects a student’s ability to thrive. We offer comprehensive training and workshops for staff, students, and parents to raise awareness and equip everyone with the tools to promote a safe, secure learning environment.
